Why
in News?
The
Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has recently
submitted three nominations from India for the Wetland City Accreditation
(WCA).
The
nominated cities include Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), and
Udaipur (Rajasthan).
The
ongoing Amrit Dharohar initiative by MoEF&CC aligns with WCA goals,
promoting the conservation values of Ramsar Sites.
What
It Is?
It
is a voluntary accreditation system to recognize the importance of wetlands in
urban and peri-urban environments.
Origin:
Outcome
of Ramsar Convention during COP12 in 2015.
Objective:
Promote
the conservation and wise use of wetlands, as well as sustainable
socio-economic benefits for local populations
Significance:
Provides
international recognition and branding for wetland conservation efforts. It
will also help in the implementation of the Amrit Dharohar Initiative (to
conserve Ramsar Sites in India)
Validity:
Once
granted it is valid for 6 years.
