Elephants in India:

Q     Elephants are keystone species as well as the Natural Heritage Animal of India.

Q     India has the largest number of wild Asian Elephants. The elephant population in the country is estimated to be over 30,000.

Q     Karnataka has the highest elephant population in India.

Gaj Yatra

Gaj Yatra" was launched to identify and protect the natural routes for Elephants in Tura, Garo Hills of Meghalaya. Gaj Yatra campaign was launched on the 12th of August, 2017 which is 'The World Elephant Day'.

The campaign is being led by Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). It aims to involve people from all walks of life in conservation of elephants. Under this campaign, WTI is securing 101 elephant corridors across in 12 elephant range states through its Right to Passage project, in partnership with Union government’s Project Elephant, state forest departments and various NGOs. The aim this project is to rehabilitate people affected by man-elephant conflict in corridor areas while ensuring uninterrupted movement of elephants between key habitats.

Project Elephant

Q     Project Elephant is a wildlife conservation movement initiated in India to protect the endangered Indian elephant. The project was initiated in 1992 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Government of India to provide financial and technical support to the states for wildlife management of free-ranging elephant populations.

Q     The project aims to ensure the long-term survival and viability of elephant populations in their natural habitats by protecting the animals, their habitats and migration corridors.

Q     The project also facilitates research of ecology and management of elephants, creating awareness of conservation among local people, and providing veterinary care for captive elephants.



Worldwide:

Monitoring of Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) Programme:

Q     The CITES Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) Programme is a site-based system designed to monitor trends in the illegal killing of elephants, build management capacity and provide information to help range States make appropriate management and enforcement decisions.

World Elephant Day:

Q     World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants.

Q     Conceived in 2011 by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark of Canazwest Pictures, and Sivaporn Dardarananda, Secretary-General of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation in Thailand, it was officially founded, supported and launched by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation on August 12, 2012.

Q     Since that time, Patricia Sims continues to lead, support and direct World Elephant Day, which is now recognized and celebrated by over 100 wildlife organizations and many individuals in countries across the globe.
